The early detection of oral carcinoma can improve the prognosis of the disease. The epidemiological data points out that one of the main factors which influences patient survival in oral and oro-pharynx cancer is the tumour's size. Therefore, one wav for increasing patient survival rates is by early diagnosis of incipient cancer lesions. The most frequent early clinical sign in oral carcinoma is a red lesion. White lesions are less common and so is the presence of both lesions. The most frequent early clinical signs for oral cancer are described in this review. lt also addresses the differential diagnosis of similar looking lesions.
