Abstract

Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine has had a major impact on EU policies, which now seek to be linked to the ultimate goal of achieving strategic autonomy. In the case of EU climate diplomacy, the EU will have to adopt a new geopolitical approach to confront the policies of Russia, which is the third largest CO2 emitter and has made the sale of gas and oil a major weapon in its war in Ukraine. In its response to Russia, the EU can set an example by making a virtue of necessity. The decarbonisation of its economy has become its strategic imperative and its main trump card in overcoming its dependence on Russian oil and gas.
