Abstract

This doctoral dissertation analyzes the relationship between cultural tourism and religious objects from Puebla's World Heritage Historic District. Specifically, this research is based on two fundamental precedents. Firstly, Puebla has become a prominent enclave as part of a group of cities supported by the quality endorsement by UNESCO since 1987. Concomitantly, this cultural enrichment has served the competent government to situate tourism as a primary means to obtain economic resources and generate employment. However, it is important to note how this association has generated different results and social perceptions: While some projects have been successful and acclaimed, others have been rejected by the people of Puebla. Considering these preceding projects, this dissertation aims to analyze the value of the religious historic-artistic heritage of Puebla's Historic District and, subsequently, offer proposals to benefit the monumental town and the population alike. In terms of methodology, the dissertation employs analytic procedures in Art History and Cultural Tourism by documenting, analyzing, and evaluating said cultural heritage and its surroundings to plan improvement strategies within the context of tourism and culture. For all that, we have been able to conclude that there is a wide margin of work, where heritage, despite the introduction of economic circuits, must continue to occupy the leading role.
