Following consolidation treatments or solvent-based cleaning of graphic documents, drycleaning is typically the first-choice method for removing superficial dirt, to prevent dirt particlesfrom dissolving and becoming ingrained. In recent decades, scholars have raised doubts as to the advisability of using erasers, leading theindustry to develop new materials to minimize the potential risks – albeit at a higher price. The present project provides an evaluation of the effect of using different erasers on graphic documents.Using GC-MS and SEM-EDX, the principal composition of the selected erasers, it morphology, the degradation process and their possible transfer to the document surfaces have beenidentified. The project finds that, using the appropriate methodology, the risks of erasing materials transferringto the surface of documents under treatment can be minimized.
