Abstract

In the beginning of university studies, tutorial programs can play a very important role, by providing much-needed psychosocial and instrumental support. This paper presents a tutorial programme carried out in the first year of a business studies degree course at the University of Granada (Spain). Over nine academic years, a total of 610 students took part in this programme. This paper analyses how gender may influence the participation and evaluation of a tutorial programme and their activities (psychosocial support activities and instrumental support activities). The results show a greater participation of women in the program. Also, the gender of the students is associated with significant differences in their overall satisfaction with the programme and in their satisfaction with the psychosocial support activities in particular. These results have evident practical and theoretical implications for the efficient design of mentoring activities, and provide new evidence on the impact of gender in the context of this type of general counselling activities for first-year university students.
