Resumen

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has serious consequences for women's health and is a global problem. This violence can be more overt (physical or sexual violence) or subtle (psychological violence or controlling behaviors), affecting its identification, perception of severity, emotions and, therefore, the intention and action to report IPV. Likewise, depending on the type of violence experienced, women's need for justice may vary. In this sense, to repair the harm caused by the aggressor, women may adopt an orientation toward retributive or restorative justice. The objective of this study was to explore the needs of victims to feel that the harm derived from IPV is repaired, considering the differentiation between overt and subtle violence. In addition, we delved into their perception of severity according to the type of violence and the emotions aroused by the most serious episode of violence. For this purpose, a comparative study was carried out with 105 women (Mage = 27.30). The results show that, in general, the participants are more in favor of restorative rather than retributive justice. This tendency is also observed in victims of subtle violence, but not in victims of overt violence. On the other hand, the participants showed a medium-high perception of severity towards IPV as a whole, with no significant differences depending on whether they had experienced overt or subtle violence. Among the most frequent emotions elicited by IPV, women who reported overt violence informed fear and shame, while in subtle violence, disgust and guilt were the most noticeable emotions. These findings highlight the importance of attending to the particular characteristics and needs of each victim in order to truly repair the harm caused by IPV.
