Résumé

This dissertation addresses the phenomenon of phrasal verbs in Spanish and Chinese. Given the complexity of this phenomenon and the relative scarcity of studies beyond Germanic languages, this work focuses on describing the semantic behavior of phrasal verbs in both languages, as well as a comparative study of them. The methodology employed is based on a robust theoretical framework in Cognitive Linguistics, particularly cognitive approaches to grammar, which provide the conceptual foundation for this research. The practical part of this study relies on real data extracted from prestigious corpus and dictionaries in both languages, such as the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy and the Modern Chinese Dictionary, among others. After analyzing and comparing the data, it has been revealed that verb+directional particle constructions in Chinese primarily serve directional and aspectual functions. In contrast, in Spanish phrasal verbs, these semantic functions are relatively scarce. This largely reflects the difference in the lexicalization of directional and resultative events between the two languages. Besides this substantial encoding difference, Spanish and Chinses share certain similarities, notably the metaphorical conceptualization of motion event. This study contributes to filling the research gap concerning phrasal verbs in Spanish and Chinese and attempts to shed light on the differences and similarities in this linguistic phenomenon between the two languages.
