Abstract

Suicide among adolescents is a global health issue that has increased over the past six decades. Suicide rates are higher in adolescent males than in females, and in Colombia, suicide among adolescents is a significant problem in violent death statistics. Suicide often begins with suicidal ideation, which is the presence of thoughts about suicide. Suicidal ideation is common in Colombia, affecting around 20-24% of adolescents. The presence of suicidal thoughts is considered an indicator of vulnerability to suicide. This thesis focuses on suicidal ideation as an indicator of vulnerability to suicide and explores how family, religious, school, and spiritual factors, as well as psychological well-being, can influence suicidal ideation in adolescents. It is based on an ecological approach and uses statistical models to examine the complex interaction of these factors in the lives of adolescents. Based on this empirical analysis and a theoretical review of relevant previous studies, as well as research conducted with different populations, a suicide prevention intervention program for Colombian adolescents is proposed.
