Abstract

In 2022, the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention celebrates its fiftieth anniversary since itsdrafting in 1972. Due to its pioneering, binding, and now practically historic character, it is undoubtedlythe most relevant international normative instrument at the global level in the field of heritage. This article, written by the members of the World Heritage Commission of ICOMOS Spain, based on their own researchand experience in the field, reflects on the evolution of the application of the Convention in Spain, on itsinfluence on its heritage policies, on the state of conservation and typologies of the Spanish propertiesinscribed on the World Heritage List, on the main achievements of its development, on the most importantgaps and shortcomings detected and on the main challenges still posed by its correct implementation. Finally, a series of conclusions are drawn regarding these issues and the future of the Convention, some ofwhich we believe can be extrapolated to the international panorama.
