Résumé

The First Book of Scaliger's Poetices Libri Septem devotes 18 of its 57 chapters to the ancient athletic games which the author describes as "fables without words". According to Scaliger, their origin would lie in sheppherds' occasional celebrations that later turned to competition. Possible reasons for including games in the Poetices are discussed.
