Abstract

This study analyzes the perception of academics belonging to a university in Mexico, about various formal and informal factors that support the creation of new companies, as well as the effect on their entrepreneurial intention. Specifically, the study researchs the impact of intellectual property policies, acquisition of university shares, technology transfer offices, technology parks and venture capital on the academic's entrepreneurial intention. For informal factors the effect of nearby networks, with professionals and investors, was investigated. The results obtained reveal that the existence of certain mechanisms -or the formal support factors- are relevant for academics to develop an intention to create a company, specifically the availability of venture capital and the existence of technology transfer offices. While the significant informal mechanisms are the nearby and financial networks.
