Abstract

We analyze the difficulty of Primary School children of 4°, 5° and 6° levels (9, 10 and 11 years old), into choice of the proper operations when they try to solve two-steps arithmetical word problems with additive structure. Our goal is to set up the ability of the pupils to solve such kind of arithmetic problem and to value the way in that the kind of relationship (increase or decrease) both in first or second position affects this ability. We have used a repeated measure design with two between-subjects factors (teaching institution and course) and one within-subjects factor (relationship in first and second position). The obtained conclusions are: a) the ability of the pupils in arithmetic problem solving is developed upon going from 4° to 6°. b) The variable «type of relationship» influences the difficulty of choosing the adequate process of solution.
