Abstract

The scientific evidences correlate Virgin Olive Oil (VOO), major source of fat in the Mediterranean diet, with a low incidence of breast cancer. Due to its biological benefits, the phenol compounds found in VOOs are of great interest. One of the most abundant is (+)-pinoresinol, which also is a phytoestrogen with similar characteristics to human estrogens, often implicated in the development and progression of breast tumors. This study analyzes the chemopreventive and/or antitumor effects of (+)-pinoresinol in human breast cells. The results show that (+)-pinoresinol exerts cytotoxic, antiproliferative and prooxidant effects in human breast tumor cells with different estrogen receptors expression and malignancy (MDA-MB-231 and MCF7). On the other hand, (+)-pinoresinol acts as antioxidant and protector against oxidative DNA damage on human mammary epithelial cells (MCF10A) after oxidative injury
