Abstract

From the 2x2 achievement goal framework (Elliot & McGregor, 2001) based on Achievement Goal Theory (Nicholls, 1989), this research aimed at examining the predictive power of Sport Education on mastery-approach, performance-approach, mastery-avoidance and performance-avoidance goals. A total of 520 Post-Compulsory and Compulsory Secondary students participated who developed a Sport Educationbased intervention that consisted of 12 sessions, 2 sessions a week in Physical Education regular schedule in order to address sport learning in this subject. Structural equation model showed that Sport Education predicted significantly, positively and to a larger extent performance-approach goals and, to a lesser extent, mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance and performance-avoidance goals. Overall, Sport Education could provide a student‘s adequate motivational response in the sport teaching-learning process that occurs in Physical Education.
