Abstract

Socioeconomic status of translation students, in the School of Languages-Mexicali of UABC, as independent variable in the acquisition of translation competence: An exploratory research. Doctoral candidate: José Cortez Godínez Thesis Director: Dra. Arianne Reimerink This diachronic research, which is part of the empirical translation studies, was conducted in School of Languages-Mexicali of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) in Mexico, in the period 2006-2013. Our interest in the translation process-oriented started in 2005. Our object was the intermediate level of B.A., and we built on PACTE theorizing for research design. The PACTE Group (Process of Acquisition of Translation Competence and Evaluation) established a model of translation competence that breaks down into six sub-competences (PACTE 2000, p.101). We analyzed and measured six variables that integrate the PACTE¿s Model of translation competence (2003). Then we selected the Transfer Sub-competence (which is the essence of Translation Competence, TC) and the Linguistic Sub-competence in second language (SCL2) and crossed them with a socio-economic study -applied to the entire sample. A detailed analysis of the translations was conducted coupled with this, where we discover a timely co-ocurrence between terminology management and the TC scores of subjects. That is, subjects with higher ratings (high CT) were investigating more keywords. Our results showed that the higher the socioeconomic level of the parents, the higher the educational achievement of children, which will be reflected in their higher TC and higher SLL2. Similarly, a higher cultural and educational level of parents, lead to higher TC and higher SLL2. This is a conducive factor to the students seeking to achieve at least the same economic status of parents. Keywords: PACTE, Competition Translator, linguistic sub-competence, socioeconomic level and expertise.
