Abstract

The Information and Communication Technologies are causing great transformations in the present societies, and one of those that presents greater possibilities is the use of Big Data techniques. This research aims to introduce the concept of Big Data, to frame it into the Digital Single Market Strategy of the European Union and underlines the future possibilities that Big Data offers for the improvement of public services, especially in the field of health services and eHealth. This does not neglect the challenges of taking advantage of Big Data technologies without undermining the right to privacy or the right to personal data protection, and without provoking discrimination against certain individuals or groups by the automated decision making based on profiling that allows the use of Big Data.
