Abstract
X-ray diffraction profiles yield information of the nature and extent of lattice imperfections. In this case a modification of the variance method (Wilson, 1963) has been used to determine lattice distortion of clay minerals. The high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) is well-suited for the description of reticular defects in minerals because it permits the imaging of non-periodic features. Using these complementarles methods; changes in quantity and typology of lattice imperfections has been studied in clay minerals from diagenesis to low grade metamorphism.
