Abstract

Some controversy exists over which is the best strategy to improve the performance of knowledge workers. The two most common alternative strategies are codification and personalization. The effect of codification practices (Use of IT and knowledge codification) and personalization practices (TMS development and improvement of personal external networks) are analysed in this study. Results show that both strategies have positive effects on performance. Using a codification strategy has a positive direct effect on performance but not on knowledge transfer. On the other hand, improving workers’ external relationships enhance knowledge transfers but do not directly improve performance. Finally, developing TMS affects both the use of IT and knowledge transfers. The analysis was performed on knowledge workers in a military environment.
