Abstract
The goal of this work is to characterize the presence of pictures that accompany problems in threeprimary education textbooks in Chile. We analyzed 397 images, using the content analysis method.We focused on three aspects: the presence of pictures that accompany problems in textbooks, typesof pictures (illustrative, analytical or abstract pictures) and contribution to the solving processes.As a result, we found a considerable amount of pictures that accompany problems, in a greaterproportion of illustrative type, but with little relevance to support solving processes. In conclusion,we consider that the pictures that incorporate the texts could contribute more to problem solving ifits use were intentional.
