Abstract

Fray Luis de León contributed to the heyday of the two main linguistic trends of his time: the vulgar and the classical. On the one hand, he was an enthusiastic creator of the vernacular language in his Castilian writings, something that could also be observed in his Latin writings, which contained Castilian words, sayings and proverbs of the contemporary language. On the other hand, he displayed a selective eagerness to construct his own language following classical principles, and his intention of recovering the classical learned sense of words; this is realized by means of phonetic and grammatical devices, lexical selection and the adoption of the etymological meaning of words.
