Resumen
Fluent and accurate word recognition is the stepping stone in literacy acquisition, in addition to a sine qua non requisite for achieving comprehension. The strong relationship among different phonological processes (phonological awareness, verbal short-term memory, working memory and rapid lexical access to phonological representations in long-term memory) and reading acquisition is highly agreed within scientific community. This paper reviews these processes characterization, the evidence about how they differently contribute to reading achievement depending of different factors, mainly code orthographic consistency and reading development level, and finally, how to assess them.
