Resumo

In this qualitative research we explore the conceptual and semantic understanding of basic linearequations of elementary school students recently introduced to solving equations. We analyse theindividual answers of 38 grade five students in a Czech public primary school to a paper-based taskconsisting in justifying whether the equation 5+2x=13 describes each one of 5 contextualizedsituations. Under a Grounded Theory approach, we provide a system of categories of the students’strategies. In particular, our findings show: (a) students’ abilities to internalize true mathematicalfacts on equations, (b) the variety, no systematization and adaptation of their strategies to eachsituation, (c) the dependency of the strategy on the way in which the situation is presented.
