Abstract

Introduction: The IUD is a contraceptive method cost-effective. The aim of the study is to analyze the cost benefit in Intrauterine Device (copper and levonorgestrel releasing system MIRENA®) and make recommendations to optimize the resources. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of electronic medical history of women whose IUD were inserted from 1March 2006 to 31July 2007 from the western and central health district of Granada (n=123). We considered gynaecologic-obstetric variables and degree of satisfaction by telephone survey. We consulted the Management Control Unit of San Cecilio Universitary Hospital of Granada to quantify the insertion cost. SPSS 15.0 was used to make statistic calculation. Results: 123 were inserted (17 MIRENA®). Bleeding disorders were the most common extraction cause in both devices. Conclusions: We estimate the cost (in terms of wastage) was €8.640, 84 during this period, taking into account those cases which did not reach the typical time of use ( 60 months) of IUD device because of its premature removal.
