Abstract

The aim of the present study is to analyse the impact of the use of music, specifically tango songs, in the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom, with the aim of improving linguistic and intercultural competences, as well as to propose an alternative educational model that involves students and encourages their motivation. The proposal is based on constructivist principles, based on Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning, Bloom’s taxonomy and emotional learning. The didactic project fits in the communicative approach and task-based learning with an orientation towards meaningful, cooperative and intercultural learning. The issue of culture has been of particular relevance in our thesis, based on the concept that language is used to construct socio-cultural identity, and that language is no longer merely a system of linguistic elements, but also a system of identity, a fundamental concept in the study of Argentine speech and lunfardo. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, we have used a mixed methodology, starting with quantitative data and then interpreting these data qualitatively, in order to be able, after analysis, to design a didactic strategy for learning Spanish. The introduction of different methods aims to complete the explanation of the problem and to provide information on linguistic aspects, socio-cultural knowledge, emotional aspects, motivation, cooperation and creativity. The results obtained reveal that students have significantly improved their lexical and intercultural competence, intrinsic and integrative motivation, motivation to learn Spanish. Their attitude towards themselves as learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language and attitude towards Hispanic culture also improved significantly. The study confirms that teaching ELE (Español lengua extranjera) through listening to tango songs helps to develop different competences and skills in students; it also shows the feasibility of its application and incorporation in the Spanish classroom and the educational value of this tool for students.
