El papel de los probióticos en la prevención de las infecciones urinarias recurrentes en mujeres

Resumen

Introducción: Las infecciones urinarias (IU) figuran entre las enfermedades infecciosas más prevalentes. Los antibióticos empleados para el tratamiento y la prevención de recurrencias generan un coste sanitario importante y una alteración de la microbiota vaginal, lo que ha llevado a buscar otras alternativas terapéuticas, entra ellas los probióticos. El objetivo del estudio es analizar el papel de los probióticos en la prevención de IU recurrentes en mujeres. Material y métodos: Realizamos una búsqueda en la base de datos PUBMED, de los artículos publicados hasta enero del 2013, con los términos �probiotics and urinary tract infection�, obteniendo 66 artículos de los cuales finalmente seleccionamos 37 artículos. Resultados: De los 37 artículos, 25 son revisiones bibliográficas, 6 ensayos clínicos randomizados, controlados y el resto estudios piloto y de casos-controles prospectivos. Se ha comparado la administración de Lactobacillus frente a trimetropin-sulfametoxazol (TMP / SMX) observando que Lactobacillus no cumple con los criterios de no inferioridad en la prevención de las IU en comparación con TMP / SMX. Asimismo, se comparó el consumo de zumo de arándano frente a Lactobacillus, observando una disminución del número de recurrencias en el grupo que tomó arándano. En los estudio es los que se comparó Lactobacillus frente a placebo si se ha observado un reducción entre el 50-70% en el número de recurrencias respecto al placebo. Conclusiones: Aunque la mayoría de los estudios son heterogéneos y de un tamaño muestral pequeño, el uso de ciertas cepas de Lactobacillus para la prevención recurrencias de ITU es prometedor.
