Abstract

Interest in the relationship between food and health has been extremely important in recent years. "Functional Food" have moved to the forefront in narratives referring to health care, lifestyles and body worship. There is an avalanche of newspaper articles and advertisements that highlight the healthy virtues of these products, and there are also voices that denounce the phenomenon as a scam, which takes advantage of the credulity of consumers and their health concerns. But the linear models of communication and the conspiracy theories of manipulation are not sufficient to understand these phenomena. It is more appropriate to think of communication as an ecosystem, in which industrial interests, scientific and technological advances, the reality of the media, and corporate social responsibility intersect.
