Abstract

This work is part of a broader investigation on algebraic thinking. We describe here the mediationscarried out by a researcher with second (7-8 years) and fourth (9-10 years) primary schoolstudents. Students explained their responses to a questionnaire involving a generalization task tothe researcher in individual semi-structured interviews. The researcher mediated when the studentdid not progress, he was wrong in his answers or to require explanations. We identify differenttypes of mediations. Each mediation fulfilled a specific role that helped each student to generalize.Invite and challenge mediations were the most used. From the teaching field, this study providessome guidance on how to guide students towards generalizing
