Resum
This study is part of a broader research project focused on studying the functional thinking of elementary school students and addresses generalization among 22 fourth grade students (9-10 years old) when working on a task that includes a functional relationship (y=2x). We identified different levels of generalization among the students during a class session. In this session, students participated actively, responding to different cases with close, distant, and indeterminate quantities. We found that students used different levels of generalization, from particular recursive to particular emergent functional, according to previously established categories. In addition, we identified that these levels of generalization were associated with the moment of the class and the case presented.
