Abstract

Alternative Education has become a tool for inclusion, designed for young people from any social groups with special educational needs that are not normally addressed in a homogeneous school environment. Alternative Education is poorly understood, in part due to its many definitions and manifestations, although it is associated with pedagogical proposals such as Montessori and Waldorf. It fulfills the task, like Social Education, of social and educational integration of students outside of the mainstream. This article presents a review of the history, its typology and the organizational schemes used in Alternative Education in relation to regular education; at the same time that a complementary parallel of the socio-pedagogical action of Social Education is carried out. In addition, a review of its impact on the retention, performance and graduation of students based on European experiences and in Puerto Rico and the United States
